Should you get your category and tag archives indexed

 If you are using Wordpress, you must no index the category, tag and author archives and let Google index only the posts pages.

After all, Google will find the same posts through the archives as well. If you are not including the archives in the xml sitemap, there is no need to get them indexed either.

The archive pages sometimes start competing with the main posts for ranking which can hurt SEO. If users can find these posts directly, there is no need to get every archive page crawled unless you have a lot of extra crawl budget.

To remove them from indexation, you can just mark them as no index using a SEO plugin like Yoast, Rank math, AIOSEO or SEO Framework.

Sometimes Google can start indexing all the paginated pages in your archives. That too can hurt your crawl budget and seo. The best option is to index the posts and static pages and leave archives as no index, follow.
